Craving charcoal chicken?
Why not go Peruvian?

If you're in Canberra, head down to the Jamison shops for charcoal chicken and you'll find yourself sitting down instead in a small take away adorned with colorful cultural posters of llamas and  rose-cheeked   children in chullos - trying to decide whether to go the chook or opt for some other authentic Peruvian fare like the lomo saltadopapa rellena or aji de gallina. It's been a few years since returning from a trip to Peru and so was surprised to see these popular dishes available and tasting as good as I remember. I was also very excited to see chicha morada (purple corn, cinnamon and pinapple punch- like a virgin sangria with a twist) and Inca Cola as drinks options and alfajores with dulce de leche for dessert.

I chose and was very satisfied with the lomo saltado - a sort of beef stir fry with onions, tomatoes and potato chips, and served with rice- though I would have preferred the potatoes were thicker and crunchier.  I tasted the aji de gallina (creamy spicy chicken), which was so good and brought back memories of our time abroad. The chicha morada was great too and while purple corn may be difficult to find in Melbourne I am happy to report it can be found at Casa Iberica along with Inca Cola (in a sachet like tang!).

The family who run it are very friendly and were pleased to see someone so enthusiastic about the cuisine. It's great knowing there's a tasty Peruvian place in Canberra and am eager to go back soon to try the charcoal chicken - forgot to try it!

  3. I've been there and the food is fantastic. There is nothing like it in Canberra. We are there every week and must have the pollo a la brasa once a week with that delicious chilli...

  4. I couldn't believe my eyes and my tastebuds... I have eaten peruvian food in Sydney and the taste was close but not as acurate as Cholo's... OMG when I had Juanes it reminded me of my grandma's cuisine back home and the Frejoles Nortenos wow... A true peruvian signature. We had everything we could possibly get that afternoon and shared it and we were so full yet we wanted more since we knew we were heading back to Sydney and it will be a while before we return to Canberra... Helado de Lucuma was just to die for... I am so proud that The Australian public will now be able to taste the authentic peruvian flavours... Thank you Cholo's for making us Peruvians proud. Keep up the awesome work you are doing...
