Tandoori Den

Tandoori Den
261 Camberwell Road
Camberwell, 3124
An institution in Camberwell, this place is known for being one of the few restaurants that serves alcohol in a predominantly dry zone area. It also serves up a great vindaloo which will make sure it's not easily forgotten. We took advantage of this on a chilly, rainy evening when the prospect of a hot and spicy curry was particularly inviting. Coping on eyeful of the tandoor chef diligently skewering pieces of chicken brought out the pavlovian canine in both of us although we didn't have to wait long until the main fare arrived. We were spoiled for choice with garlic naan, butter chicken, chicken vindaloo with a big slice of chilli that I dared myself to eat, only to be disappointed (relieved?) at the relative absence of seething heat. We also had some saffron rice, cachumber and pappadums which left us with that nice fuzzy feeling of having enjoyed a very good meal!

My only regret was not trying the complimentary mango lollies-just another reason to return in the not too distant future!

  1. go M with the vindaloo! my first and only foray down the vindaloo road was memorable only because i was sidled with a three day migraine afterwards. that's how intense the heat felt to me - and i'm not ordinarily a wimp with spicy stuff!

  2. That place is down the road from me, but I've never tried it. Will have to venture down there one day...Garlic naan sounds good...

  3. Mmmmm, Tandoori Den... we found this place a few years ago by conducting an informal poll everytime we got chatting to a friendly taxi driver who was from India, asking which Indian restaurant they'd recommend. Tandoori Den was the clear leader in the Booroondara area!
